Energize and lose weight?
5 / 5.0
The prospect of losing weight while drinking an energy drink certainly is appealing. The surprise is this actually tastes good. My wife and I decided to give it a trial. A can for mid-morning, a can mid-afternoon and a can before an evening walk, for 13 days. Can't say for sure the cause, but I lost 1 pound and my wife 2. It may have been just cutting out the sugary alternatives. Because of the decent taste we're going to keep it up. Would love to hear from others. This almost sounds too good to be true.

Similar to a bar cookie
3 / 5.0
They were passing out samples of these the other day and so I took one and brought it home to try.

It looks like a bar cookie, browned on one side, and smells sweet and fruity. It tastes a little bit like a cross between a cookie and bread pudding with coconut flavor while the papaya, mango and pineapple combine to taste just about like dried apricot to me. The flavor combination is not bad at all. I wouldn't guess that it had soy in it instead of another type of flour and the texture isn't bad, just the right amount of chewiness.

However, the bar is fairly small and a little dry so I probably won't be buying any. People who like this sort of snack or have some special reason to choose them like avoiding wheat products will probably enjoy them. If I were offered other flavors to try I would taste them so my rating is neutral.

Editorial Review
Do you overeat because you don't feel satisfied or full? Volumetrics is based on "the science of satiety"--what researchers have learned about the food choices that make people feel full. The authors teach you how to eat low-calorie-dense, high-volume foods so that you feel like you've eaten plenty, even though you've eaten fewer calories. You'll lose weight without feeling hungry or deprived.

Here's an example of how volume affects eating. Raisins are dried grapes. But 100 calories of raisins fill only one-quarter cup, while 100 calories of fresh, whole grapes fill one and two-thirds cups. You'll feel satisfied after one and two-thirds cups of grapes, but if you're eating raisins, you're likely to keep filling your mouth. The point is not to stop eating raisins (or chocolate, cheese, or other high-calorie, low-volume foods), but to realize that you're likely to take in many more calories before your body tells you you're full. If you're trying to manage your weight, eating more low-density foods (lower-calorie foods that have a lot of volume) will make you feel full while you drop pounds.

Barbara Rolls, a respected and well-published food-nutrition researcher at Pennsylvania State University, and food writer Robert Barnett explain energy density and how to use this concept to lose weight. They include the scientific evidence about how low-density (low-calorie, high-volume) foods make you feel satisfied, the best (and worst) foods for a satisfying, lower-calorie diet, a menu plan, an exercise plan, and environmental influences on eating. You also learn which foods are easiest to overeat. This is not a fad diet--it is logical and scientifically based, yet easy to understand and put into action. --Joan Price

The Plan, Summarized
5 / 5.0
I hate making the effort to be conscious of what I eat, but, I'm not 20 anymore so when I had put on a significant amount of weight about a year ago I buckled down and began the pursuit of returing to "fit". This book was the key ingredient to my effort's success.

The takeaway from this book: How to avoid cravings and feel full longer. How often you opt for low-cal/high density foods (the list of which - surprise! - points to veggies and fruit) directly translates to a decrease in cravings. An equation: Divide the calories in one serving of any food by that serving's weight in grams, and how high or low that resulting number (Energy Density) is tranlates directly to how satiated you will feel, and for how long you will be satisfied, before you are thinking about eating again. The book is not a new diet as much as it is a manual for how to avoid living with cravings.

There is a food list included in the book that notes the best Vmetrics food, I highly reco you keep it close in the beginning. As I acquainted myself with the list, I learned that not all "healthy" foods have great Energy Densities (e.g., bananas are over four times less satiating than strawberries, and pecans have a higher energy density than full-fat Ranch dressing).

There are some important ins and outs throughout the book; while relying on the aforementioned equation is a big part of the diet and can alone take you a long ways, reading the book in its entirety is going to provide a foundation for your success as well.

There is ONE extra practice I have had to implement to make Volumetrics work for me, and I cannot emphasize enough how important it has been: I consistently eat prior to feeling hungry. If I don't do this and only eat when I start thinking about food, it is too easy (for me) to make the wrong food choices. So I eat about an hour before I've learned my cravings will hit, and in effect, I'm easily able to make good food choices. Also, if you don't have a great entree from the Volumetrics cookbook handy, this practice makes it easier to eat blander food like fruits and veggies an hour before I'm actually hungery, versus trying to chew through that kind of food when I have nothing but deep dish pizza in mind. This eat-before-I'm-hungry addendum has been the thing that's helped me to actually do this eating plan day after day, and not feel like I have been sacrificing so much in terms of my favorite foods.

I've tried many of the big name diets out there, and this is the only one that worked for me, has taken relatively no will power to do, and has allowed me to be healthy in the process. I'm fit again, and look 10 years younger. Well worth the price of this book.

Disappointed
1 / 5.0
I was really excited to get the book, thinking it was going to be the start of something new...but it wasn't. There is still a lot of measuring and calorie counting. The recipes are flamboyant and filled with items that are expensive and if you live in a small town like I do, they can also be hard to find. On to the next diet phenom...

Basically Solid, But A Bit Too Much Emphasis on Fat & Not Enough on Carbs
4 / 5.0
This review is of the 2000 copyright edition, I have not seen the updated book.

"Volumetrics" is a well-researched eating plan by a respected professor of nutrition. Dr. Rolls does an excellent job of illustrating the important of energy density as it relates to portion size. I particularly appreciated the visuals comparing the relative portion sizes of similar foods that have different energy densities.

The main complaint I have about the plan (as set forth in the 2000 edition) is the author's overemphasis on fat and underemphasis on carbohydrates. She pooh-poohs the Glycemic Index and the effect carbs (particularly refined ones) have on insulin levels in the body. Yes, fat has a higher energy density than carbs do, but that doesn't mean all fats are bad and all carbs are good. It just means that the individual has to watch portion sizes of good fats like nuts, avocadoes, & olive oil. And dieters should definitely practice moderation in their carb intake and avoid refined carbs.

The top of the diet book list: More Taste, More Filling, Less Calories
5 / 5.0
There are thousands of diet books out there promoting approaches with varying combinations of common sense, science, experience, and novelty in their approach to weight control. They each have their advocates. I think Volumetrics is at the very top of the list of approaches for a number of reasons.

First is credibility. Barbara Rolls is not a personal trainer or a celebrity or "nutritionist" in the generic sense or someone who read a handful of studies and observed a handful of clients to derive her conclusions, she is a leading nutrition and health researcher. She knows the trends and patterns in the research, she knows which approaches have been reliable and which have not in the long run and with the widest base of people. Her foundation in the science of weight control is as solid as anyone writing about nutrition, and much better than 99.9% of the authors.

Second is flexibility. Volumetrics is not a concept based on sensory-specific boredom or food restriction, common and very popular approaches which generally are self-defeating. Volumetrics is instead based on understanding our own feelings of satisfaction with food so that we can feel satisfied while meeting our health goals rather than depriving ourselves. There are a number of effective tactics in Volumetrics for eating in a way that is satisfying and does not restrict food yet does restrict calories and therefore control weight. These tactics are not all or nothing, you can apply the ones you need to the degree that you need without following rigid rules and dietary restrictions. The tactics are organized in modular fashion. You can apply these principles when you go out to eat or order take-out or prepare your own favorites or you can make your own Volumetric meals from scratch, or any combination of these. Most of the time you are not avoiding foods at all, you are actually adding new ones in to help satisfy hunger so you don't need as much of the ones you crave in order to feel satisfied.

Third is variety. Unlike most programs, Volumetrics takes advantage of our natural inclination to eat a variety of foods in order to get the wide variety of nutrients that we need for optimal health. Most programs recognize that variety triggers us to eat more, so they discourage it and encourage boredom but we eventually get bored of nutritional boredom. Volumetrics instead encourages variety but provides a variety of choices that help rather than hurt weight control goals.

The central concepts are probably not going to be new to anyone who reads diet books. The presentation of their scientific basis and the reason why they work in terms of modern obesity research models is the strength of this book, and having this rationale is what allows the principles to be applied more flexibly. If you understand the *why* of the food choices, you can improvise flexibly in your own application of the program, and that's what Volumetrics gives you.

The key principle is satiety. Research indicates that in the long run we tend to eat until we are satisfied and we know we are satisfied in two ways. First, a complex collection of physiological signals from various parts of the body combine to produce the experience of satiety itself. Then we also learn what behaviors and foods lead to the experience of satiety for us. The Volumetrics approach centers around learning how to effectively produce the experience of satiety with what we eat and how to retrain our expectations for what we need to eat to be satisfied. That's it, the rest is details.

The main detail is the concept of energy density. Another important consistent research result is that people tend to eat the same amount by weight because of how we've learned to satisfy our hunger. The key result that makes the Volumetrics approach workable is that we can trigger the same signals that a particular weight of food produces with an equal volume of more satisfying, less energy-dense food. By deliberately creating the right sensory experience and fullness with foods that have less caloric energy, we learn to satisfy our hunger with less calories and so lose weight while eating more healthy and less calories.

The important point is that this is not about just eating salads and soups all the time, it is about strategically getting good nutrition by knowing the relative energy density of foods and eating more of the low energy density foods we really enjoy, and then more strictly portion control the higher energy density ones we have been craving and have been obstacles to our health goals. The emphasis on satiety in low-density foods controls the cravings for the high-density ones, making this possible.

This probably sounds a lot like common sense, and I think much of it is. However the details and their scientific rationale are what really make the program in this book stand out and make it workable and flexible. Volumetrics explains the specific problems with various other approaches like high protein/low carb and presents a broadly workable and scientifically based alternative that give you good lifelong nutritional habits rather than a tricky way to lose weight for a few weeks. I've been gradually incorporating these principles into my own life for several years and have been very happy with both their sustainability and their effectiveness. I think this program is going to be they key to weight control for a lot of people.

Given that the treatment of weight control in this book is so good, let's look at the few limitations.

First, since it is written from the perspective of health, there is really no treatment of performance or athletic nutrition, so athletes interested in weight control may be able to use these principles but they will not be able to rely on this book for their complete nutritional program.

Second, a related limitation is that the treatment regarding exercise is rather weak compared to the treatment of nutrition. Guidelines for walking and moderate activity are emphasized particularly for weight maintenance where they are most effective, rather than weight loss. The Volumetric approach is consistent with the trainer's dictum "you can't out-train a bad diet." Only a competitive endurance athlete and few extremes of that sort can hope to move so much that they burn off an energy-dense diet. So the principles of weight loss emphasize calorie restriction and satiety rather than exercise. As Volumetrics explains, exercise becomes important in three ways for weight *maintenance* (rather than loss) however: (1) strength training builds lean mass which raises resting metabolism, so we don't need to restrict calories as much, and (2) activity itself is more successful at maintaining weight than losing it, once we have eating patterns that maintain a nearly stable weight, and (3) a good exercise program is extremely effective at increasing our sense of self-efficacy, which leads to compliance and success in other habits as well. The limitation is that the book offers no help in what makes a good exercise program effective in these ways. It is not a book about exercise. High intensity exercise is mentioned as possibly even more useful for people who can tolerate it. I think this aspect is very important and should have been discussed a bit more. However it is a large book with a lot of details on its core principles, and exercise is really just a secondary concern to the authors.

Third, there is really very little discussion of popular principles that just aren't effective or those that possibly might be useful. The authors explain that most diets succeed in the short term because of various kinds of boredom and appetite suppression rather than because they are sound eating patterns. And they explain why adequate protein is important but more than that is not particularly helpful in the long run for weight control. But all of the rest of the tactics are left pretty much untouched. It would have been useful for some of the more intriguing ones to have been addressed, such as intermittent fasting.

Fourth, the thoroughness of the book will also be its downfall for some less patient readers used to reading web pages rather than books. This is a real book, not a pamphlet. It doesn't give you a condensed program in abstract form in the first few pages, you have to read the book and digest its lessons in order to get its full education and apply them effectively and flexibly. That's the whole point of the program, at least from my perspective, that deeper knowledge of the principles will help you with lifelong better eating.

All in all, I'd say this is the best single book on general principles of lifelong nutrition for weight control, it is detailed, comprehensive, and authoritative, and the program is practical, flexible, and sustainable. I'd venture so far as to say that other programs probably succeed or fail largely on how well they apply the sound principles behind Volumetrics.

This is the book to use for your New Year Resolution to LOOSE Weight!
5 / 5.0
I have had this book around for a few years, but this morning, I was trying to think of how to "volumize" my oatmeal to reduce the calories, and came up with a chopped apple in leu of my usual raisins. The Apples gave me SO much more to eat, with alot more satiation!

I had not really used this book, and have decided to incooporate more of the ideas Ms. Rolls presents. I am adding MORE vegetables to my soups,

and at Subway, will go for a large salad in the future to elimate the bread calories!

It was cheap, good shipping time and arrived undamaged. it is mostly realistic the weight look ect., except the top where the tab is is a little off, but I suppose this is because they had to fix it so that it could not open like a normal can of dr pepper. Other than the slight difference on the top the can is just like a real can and can easily deceive people.

There is NO WAY to tell this thing isnt real unless you try to open it(with the pop top) and if that is the case, you will likely think it is just a defective can of soda. My friends get a kick out of it when they see it.

So much fun.

I purchased this as a Christmas present for my boyfriend. He loves it! The outside of the can is indistinguishable from a real can of Dr. Pepper. (The only difference that we could come up with--and it's not a serious one at all--is that there's no time/date stamp on the can. No big deal: I doubt a thief or a nosy roommate would even notice.) As others have commented, it's heavy and solid like a full can of Dr. Pepper. The compartment inside the can is relatively small, so you can't hide that much in there. Also, when you shake it, you can hear coins or jewelry. This can is probably best for hiding items that don't rattle, like cash or documents.

Editorial Review
This Leading Edge DVD program is by Esther and Jerry Hicks, who present the teachings of the Non-Physical consciousness Abraham. In workshops held between 2006 and 2008, Abraham responded numerous times to questions about losing weight. This video presentation was compiled from ten of those workshops, and constitutes one of the most effective guides to natural weight loss ever created. Rather than recommending diet and exercise, Abraham teaches you how to modify your thoughts to take advantage of the awesome leverage provided by the Law of Attraction.

Superb education
5 / 5.0
I have played this DVD over several times, and will play it some more. By concentrating on one subject, the content of how to apply the methodology of the Law of Attraction is emphasized and I have found it to be very helpful in all areas. I was also impressed with the kindness shown toward each participant, many of whom were in obvious emotional distress regarding their inability to apply the teachings to their own problem.

Interesting ideas.
5 / 5.0
I thought this was an interesting idea about how to get slim just by thinking. It does seem to take a bit of willpower, but it's something I think most people could do. It's a good one. I also liked The Vortex: Where the Law of Attraction Assembles All Cooperative Relationships.

Weight Loss through Mental & Vibrational Reprogramming
5 / 5.0
These 2 discs are a compilation of Q & A clips, taken from past seminars, but these are the questions that most of us would likely ask when we want to know about weight issues. If you are familiar with the Hicks, they speak for Abraham, a collective consciousness and much, if not all, of the message is based on the Law of Attraction. This program is, in effect, aligning your consciousness to only what you do want (instead of what you do NOT want) to reach the weight you want to be.

Disc 1

In disc 1, Esther/Abraham reminds us about being able to create our own realities and how aligning up properly with focused energy can bring us anything we want. She explains the need to develop a process that slowly changes the vibrational effect of what we want to achieve. Really a double-whammy program, it talks about relieving yourself of not only weight, but debt, too and anything else you don't want. This is a totally different way of losing weight than 99% of the diet programs you will normally find. She also explains the importance of the emotion and expectation you place within your thoughts and how you actually need to ALLOW wellness. It is about subtle differences in your thinking that change the resistance and change your vibration. She gives you plenty of examples in the change in the words you say to yourself. She also explains that there is no one way for everyone; no diet that fits us all, because we are all different.

Disc 2

We continue with Q & A clips, as the person asks their particular question and as Abraham answers through Esther. This disc talks about creating a positive vibrational alignment with your eating experience; FEELING the emotion within where you want to be, while accepting and loving yourself where you are now; KNOWING that you are moving "downstream" (in the direction you want) and not giving up before the results can show up; not worrying about what you think others think about you; improving your own vibration, which improves the vibration of everything and everyone who comes into contact with you; not feeding a lot of energy into things that happened to you in the past; changing your CURRENT vibration; putting things into your vibrational escrow; getting excited about moving forward.

Of course, that's it in a nutshell. You need to actually listen to the 2 discs to get the full effect and the emotional buy-in, and probably listen to them many times. It sounds like a good product with a ton of helpful information. For many of us, weight maintenance has been a life-long process, so it is difficult to believe that changing our way of thinking could help. I can say that I have been doing my own work with the Law of Attraction in a variety of ways and I have made a tremendous difference just by re-aligning my thought patterns. The hardest thing seems to be to BELIEVE first, BEFORE you see, because that is in total contrast with everything we have been taught as we have traveled through life. Sometimes, the very act of re-aligning our thoughts, at the very least, changes our determination, our outlook, and our way of proceeding toward a goal.

I think it's worth a try and what Abraham/Esther says makes sense to me.

Came timely, perfect condition, I was surprised, thought I was ordering a book...must have been in a hurry that day! As usual, Ester is wonderful!

4 / 5.0
I understand that some Abraham material can get repetitive, so if you have all or most of the other DVDs you might not like this DVD because it does, from what I've been told, include a lot of people from other Abraham-Hicks DVDs. If it wasn't for that I would have given this DVD five stars.

I've only seen a few of the series so there was only one interview that I had already seen. So if you are having weight issues it's a great DVD if you aren't familiar with the other ones.

Esther talked to one woman and recommended that she make a list of her goals and things she could do with regard to weight and divide it into columns, from easiest to hardest. She said start with the most simple and easy things you can do and check off your list. Focus on the easiest things the most and do them the most, before you even try to attempt to tackle the harder stuff on your list. The easest recommmendation she gave was just drink eight glasses of water a day and put on three or four songs that you like and just move and dance to them each day.

I did try that and I've been slimming down just after a few days. I'm starting to see my jaw-line again, and it's becoming more defined every day! :)

Not only that I feel more fit and healthy and have more energy, which is the great thing about exercize. The more you do it, the more energy you have to do even more. I'm now up to working out to about 10-15 of my favorite songs and it's completley effortless and fun. I also just started to incorporate Pilates, which I tried before but it seemed so hard and tedious to do in the past. I LOVE Pilates now.

And this DVD is great not just for weight loss, but for learning that the most important thing is not just reaching your goals or improving your life circumstances with more money or finding a mate or whatever it is that you've been yearning for, but learning that what we are here to do is to be a CREATIVE INDIVIDUAL and learning how to focus our beliefs and emotions to creat FOR THE SAKE OF HOW FUN AND EXHILARATING IT IS, and to realize how amazing and beautiful we are already!

The seeming repetitiveness of some of their material actually was good for me because that's something that really took a while to get through my head from reading and watching Abraham. I finally GOT IT. :)

I think it took a while because I was so wrapped up in worrying about my weight and finances and all that other stuff that I didn't relax enough to even get the full message. I just heard "you can get what you want from thinking positive." (the familiar "Well, I've been thinking positive, where's my stuff??") Which made me even more frustrated. BUT:

Enjoy the PROCESS of creating, even the frustrating parts, AND the contrast, as Esther would say. Embrace it all. And retraining yourself to know that it's not only OK to feel good, but it's the most important thing. Learning to feel great no matter what your circumstances or what other people say or think is a very powerful place to be!

Bugs Bunny?s Thanksgiving Diet The doctor is in! And he prescribes a steady supply of cartoon laughs (featuring moments from classic Warner Bros. animated shorts plus a special wraparound story) to kick off the year-end holiday season.Bugs Bunny, make that Dr. Bugs Bunny, is the Doctor of Chubbyology, head of a Diet Clinic specializing in weighty Thanksgiving matters. His clients include Yosemite Sam, who?s just got to have varmit meat (yes, rabbit would do nicely) for Thanksgiving. And Sylvester, who?s either an emergency case or a basket case when it comes to finding a way to open a can of tuna. Plus there?s a special ?Wild Turkey Surprise? for the eternally hungry Tasmanian Devil ? and more surprises for you. So dig in! (And eat your heart out, Daffy Duck. This time, Bugs runs the entire show!)Year: 1979Director: Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, Bob McKimsonStarring: Mel Blanc, June Foray

Good to watch the night before Thanksgiving.
5 / 5.0
That's just what I do. I watch this show the night before Thanksgiving and I never get tired of this tradition. Bugs Bunny is found as the head doctor of a clinic trying to help this obese lady bunny try to watch what she eats at the Thanksgiving table. In between, he listens to Sylvester's problems, too. A nice holiday treat to enjoy the night before or on Thanksgiving day itself. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Bugs Bunny's Thanksgiving Diet left me craving for leftovers

I am an avid Looney Tunes fan and I must say that Bugs Bunnys Thanksgiving Diet did not fulfill my every expectation. I was expecting a bunch of Bugs cartoons but instead it was a short, uninterupted movie. If you are looking for something different you might want to try this but if its the classic Bugs cartoons you are after there are plenty more tapes out there that you would be better off purchasing.

SlimStyles? Weight Loss Drink Mix with PGX? French Vanilla - 1 lb 12 oz You CAN achieve and maintain your ideal weight, with SlimStyles?. The SlimStyles weight loss program has been clinically proven, is completely safe, natural, and is a highly effective way to greatly diminish appetite, making it much easier to eat less and lose weight almost effortlessly. The Canadian Center for Functional Medicine conducted a weight loss evaluation study using SlimStyles Weight Loss Drink Mix with PGX from December to February, possibly the most difficult time of year to lose weight. In spite of the holiday season, participants were able to continue to lose body fat and achieve their weight loss goals. The researchers found that participants using SlimStyles consistently lost up to two pounds per week*, which was primarily body fat. In addition to the loss in body fat, the SlimStyles weight loss program maintained lean muscle mass and did not affect body water levels. This means a better metabolic rate was achieved to help with losing weight and keeping it off. The ?secret weapon? that makes SlimStyles succeed where every other diet or weight loss plan has failed, is the revolutionary ingredient known as PGX? (short for PolyGlycoplex?). (link here for details) In a SlimStyles drink, PGX initially creates a smooth appealing texture. Once ingested, PGX continues to thicken and expand for a few hours as it absorbs water. It is important to drink lots of water w

Awesome stuff!

I've been using this product for two months and love it! It really works to help suppress your cravings and best of all it helps your digestive system. I am now regular and have lost weight, too. My clothes are starting to fit better already! I drink a shake in the morning, eat some fruit and green tea midmorning, drink shake at lunch time, eat fresh veggies and hummus in the afternoon and have a healthy dinner (protein, veggies and rice or potatoes).I don't fell deprived. Note: you do have to drink a lot of water after each shake. You will live in the bathroom! The good news is that you feel a lot less bloated while losing weight! I do workout three times a week.

I feel great. Try it. It just might work for you!

So Far, So Good

I have just ordered this for a second time. I have lost 5 pounds and my appetite has decreased tremendously. It is very important to drink lots of water with this! Although this comes in different flavors, I get the vanilla so that I can add different fruits and flavorings. Right now, I just added a banana and some coconut flavoring. I also add about 2 ounces of almond milk to the 12 ounces of water so that there is a creamier texture. First couple of times this didn't taste very good, but I have gotten used to it and adding fruit (pears, strawberries, bananas, peaches, etc.) helps.

Useless Item
1 / 5.0
I ordered and received one of these scales in December, 2006. When it arrived, it worked but was somewhat erratic. A week or so later it just quit working entirely. As it was under warranty, I obtained an RA and sent it for repair (I had to pay shipping one-way). The total cost of this wonderful scale had now risen to over $50. Some time later, I received a replacement unit but this one was a different color than the one sent back. No big deal but, sure enough, a month or so later, the new one died as well. Amazon should cease selling these things. They are, without a doubt, the most cheaply made pieces of junk I've seen since the "Japanese Transistor Radios" of the 1950s.

Worth the money
4 / 5.0
I didn't give this product 5 stars simply because the gram weight only goes by 5 gram increments instead of one and because the mode button (which switches from ounces to grams) is disobedient at times. But these issues are minimal and haven't given me any heartache yet. It's a good buy for my simple purposes and it looks great on the counter. Very professional-looking.

DOES WHAT IT SHOULD
5 / 5.0
It's a scale. It does what it should. I didn't have to think about it when I began to use it. I don't have to think about it when I use it now. And the price was great. Pretty much what you want (but have given up expecting) when you buy something as ordinary as a scale.
